ARCHIVE: Newsletter Posts - August 2009: Auraria Library News For Humanities and Anthropology Faculty Members - August 2009

Welcome to Fall 2009. For this newsletter, at the urging of our Webmaster (who diplomatically mentioned the old format was, uh, kind of boring) I'm experimenting with a new type of delivery, moving from web page to blog format.

Use the links you see on the left to get a list of all the news posts in your subject discipline or click on the title of this newsletter, AUR News, to view all of the entries regardless of subject.

New Bibliographer for English, Film Studies, and Modern Languages Departments

A note from Ellen Metter:

After many delightful years of working with you, I'm handing over my liaison cap to Nikki McCaslin starting with the Fall 2009 semester. I'll still be at the library, but working as a bibliographer with other disciplines.

Nikki is marvelous to work with so I know you'll be pleased. A number of you likely know Nikki through her instruction and reference work at the Auraria Library. And now introducing...

Nikki enjoys reference and teaching a variety of classes. She has a background in literature, languages, social work (especially foster care and adoption), and culinary arts. She earned a master’s degree in librarianship and information management from the University of Denver and a master’s degree in English Literature from University of Colorado at Denver.

Worldcat Local at Auraria Library: A New Search Option

In addition to Skyline, the Library's catalog, Prospector, the Colorado/Wyoming shared catalog, and the many databases the Library offers, you now have a new search option: Worldcat Local at Auraria Library, which appears as the Start My Research box on the Library's home page or via its Advanced Search Mode.

Some Advantages to Searching in Worldcat Local at Auraria Library include:

  • Immediate access to resources both at the Auraria Library and in other libraries - local, national, and beyond - usually with an option for borrowing the resource if it's not available on campus or online. For most searches, Auraria Library holdings will appear first and the record will say 'Held by: Auraria Library'
  • One search retrieves resources of all types: journals, books, ebooks, videos, government publications, and more. Though most of the Library's journal databases are not yet integrated into World Cat Local, tens of thousands of periodical articles are included in this first iteration.
  • The ability to create lists of recommended resources, add reviews and descriptive tags to records, and more. In order to use and fully plumb these options create a free account on Worldcat at Auraria.

Orientation to Smart Classrooms

Auraria Media Center and Classroom Support Services supplies an online orientation to the Auraria campus smart classrooms. See their Powerpoint presentation and a short video about using smart classrooms at: http://mediacenter.auraria.edu/classroom.html

Although these online instructions aren't offered by the Library, I'm promoting them since professors often use library resources - DVD and VHS films, primarily - in the smart classrooms.
